Start With How You Actually Cook
Before any cabinet finish or countertop material is discussed, the kitchen design has to answer one question: how does this household actually use the kitchen?
A couple who orders in four nights a week and cooks simple meals on the other three needs a different kitchen from a family that cooks from scratch every day with wok cooking, steaming, deep frying and baking all in regular rotation. The first household can prioritise aesthetics over durability. The second household needs a kitchen where every surface choice reflects the reality of what it is going to absorb.
This question changes the countertop material decision, the hood extraction specification, the cabinet door finish choice and whether an open kitchen layout is actually viable. Kitchen Layouts That Work in Singapore HDB Flats
Most HDB kitchens fall into one of three layouts and the layout is determined by the flat’s structure, not by the homeowner’s preference. Understanding what your layout allows changes the conversation with your contractor from “I want this” to “here is the best version of what I have.”
Single-wall (I-shape) kitchen: All cabinets on one wall. Common in 3-room HDB flats and compact condos. Works well with a peninsula or breakfast bar extending perpendicular from one end if floor area allows. The limitation is counter workspace, which can be addressed by wall-mounted folding shelves or a purpose-built side counter.
L-shape kitchen: Cabinets on two adjoining walls. The most common layout in 4-room and 5-room HDB flats. Creates a natural work triangle between sink, hob and fridge. The corner requires a proper corner solution, either a magic corner pull-out or a diagonal unit, because a standard corner cabinet wastes 30 to 40 percent of its potential storage.
Galley (parallel) kitchen: Cabinets on two opposing walls with a corridor between. Efficient for cooking because everything is within reach without turning far. Works best when the corridor is at least 900mm wide. Narrower than that and two people cannot be in the kitchen simultaneously.
Open concept kitchens are a design decision rather than a layout. Any of the three layouts above can be opened to the living and dining area by removing the wall between them, subject to HDB approval and the structural wall rules. The trade-off is always about cooking fumes and the quality of extraction required to make the space livable.
Cabinet Design: Where Kitchen Aesthetics Live
Cabinet design is the dominant visual decision in any Singapore kitchen and also the dominant cost driver. The door finish, the handle or handleless approach and the colour direction set the kitchen’s character from across the room.
Current directions that are holding up well in Singapore kitchen renovation:
- Handleless matte white or warm greige cabinets with a sintered stone countertop in a travertine or marble look. The restraint of the cabinet colour makes the countertop the statement. Works well in both contemporary and Japandi kitchen directions.
- Two-tone cabinets: upper cabinets in a lighter matte tone and lower cabinets in a deeper colour. Navy or forest green lower cabinets with white or warm beige upper cabinets is the most requested version. Adds visual interest without committing the entire kitchen to a bold colour.
- Full dark kitchen: charcoal or deep green cabinets with a dark stone countertop and brass or gold hardware. Works best in kitchens with good natural light or in open-plan layouts where the dark kitchen is a deliberate design anchor. In enclosed HDB kitchens with one small window it can feel oppressive.
- Light oak veneer or oak-look laminate cabinets with a white or stone countertop. The Japandi and Scandinavian direction that has been consistently popular. The wood warmth reads well regardless of lighting conditions.

Countertop Design: The Surface That Defines the Kitchen
The countertop is where the kitchen either looks expensive or does not. It is also where material durability matters most because it takes more direct heat, moisture, acid and mechanical impact than any other surface in the home.
Sintered stone has become the leading choice for Singapore kitchen countertops at mid-range and above because it genuinely handles what Singapore cooking involves. Hot wok, lime juice, turmeric, daily wiping with cleaning cloths: sintered stone handles all of this without staining, etching or requiring the careful maintenance that marble demands. Kitchen Lighting: A Detail Most Singapore Homeowners Underplan
Kitchen lighting is where design and function have to meet at the same time. The ceiling lights need to be bright enough for safe food preparation and accurate colour judgment. The under-cabinet lights need to eliminate shadow on the countertop work surface. And the overall tone needs to not make the food look unappetising.
4000K neutral white on the main ceiling and under-cabinet strip lighting is the right specification for most Singapore kitchens. It is bright enough for accurate work without the clinical harshness of 6000K. Add 3000K pendant lighting over a kitchen island or peninsula if the design includes one, which adds a warmer tone to the social aspect of the kitchen without compromising the work area. Kitchen Island: When It Works and When It Does Not
The kitchen island is the most requested element that the most Singapore kitchens cannot actually accommodate. The minimum floor clearance around an island is 900mm on all working sides. In a typical HDB kitchen with a 2.2 by 3.5 metre footprint there is simply not enough room for an island that does not make the space feel like a corridor with an obstacle in it.
Where islands work in Singapore: larger condo kitchens of 12 square metres and above, open-plan layouts where the island also serves as a dining bar and 5-room HDB kitchens that open toward the dining area. For smaller HDB kitchens, a peninsula extending from one end of the counter is usually the more functional solution because it requires clearance on three sides rather than four.
