The kitchen is where most HDB renovation budgets get tested. Cabinets, countertops, splashbacks and appliances stack up quickly, and decisions made in two showroom visits end up shaping how you cook, clean and live in your home for the next ten years. A kitchen that looks beautiful in 3D renders can still frustrate you every morning if the cabinet layout, internal storage and material choices weren’t planned around real cooking habits.
This guide explains what actually matters when designing a kitchen cabinet system for an HDB BTO, resale flat or condominium in Singapore — from carcass material to door finish, internal hardware and realistic 2026 pricing. Kitchen Cabinet Layouts That Work in Singapore Homes
Most HDB and condo kitchens fall into one of four layouts. The right one depends on the unit’s structural walls, window position and how often you actually cook.
- Single-wall (I-shape): Cabinets on one wall. Best for small 3-room HDB and compact condos where space is tight.
- Galley (parallel): Cabinets on two opposing walls. Efficient for serious home cooks; common in 4-room HDB BTO units.
- L-shape: Two adjoining walls, leaving room for a small dining area. The most popular layout in 4 and 5-room HDB flats.
- U-shape: Three walls of cabinetry. Maximum storage, but requires a generous kitchen footprint — usually only condominiums and larger 5-room HDBs.
The “kitchen island” trend works less often than Pinterest suggests in Singapore. Most HDB kitchens simply don’t have the floor area, and adding an island can block the work triangle between sink, stove and fridge.
Cabinet Carcass Materials: What’s Inside the Box
The carcass — the structural box of every cabinet — is where corners get cut on cheap quotes. In Singapore’s humidity, the carcass material decides whether your kitchen still feels solid in year five or starts to swell, sag and smell.
- E0 plywood: The standard for quality kitchen carpentry — low formaldehyde emission, strong, holds screws well, handles humidity. We use E0 plywood as a free upgrade in our Resale Kitchen Makeover package.
- E1 plywood: Acceptable but emits more formaldehyde than E0. Avoid for any cabinet near food or near children’s bedrooms.
- MDF: Cheaper, smoother surface for laminate, but absorbs water if seals fail. Acceptable for door fronts, not ideal for sink-base carcasses.
- Marine plywood: Sometimes specified for sink and stove base cabinets — better moisture resistance for the most exposed boxes.
Door Finishes: Laminate, Acrylic, Lacquer or Sintered Stone
Kitchen doors take more abuse than any other surface in a Singapore home — splashes, oil, fingerprints and the weekly hood-cleaning routine. Match the finish to how you actually cook:
- HPL (high-pressure laminate): The everyday workhorse. Affordable, durable, plenty of wood-look and stone-look options. Ranges from S$45 to S$120 per sheet depending on brand.
- Acrylic: High-gloss or matte, very modern. Shows fingerprints clearly on gloss; matte is easier to live with.
- PU lacquer: Sprayed seamless finish. Looks premium but costs significantly more and is harder to repair if scratched.
- Sintered stone fronts: The current premium choice — heat-proof, scratch-proof, matches the countertop. Standard in our higher-tier renovation projects.
For laminate selection, work with established Singapore suppliers like Admira, Avora and Lianhin — names worth asking your contractor to specify by brand and product code, not just “decent quality laminate”.
Hardware: Where Daily Frustration Hides
The single biggest difference between a kitchen that ages well and one that doesn’t is hardware. Blum, Hettich and Hafele are the names worth knowing — these are the European hardware brands that engineer hinges, drawer runners and lift systems for daily abuse over decades.
Non-negotiables for a kitchen you’ll be happy with:
- Soft-close hinges on every door
- Full-extension undermount drawer runners — so you can see the back of each drawer
- Aventos or Boxx lift systems for upper cabinets above the hood
- Magic-corner or carousel solutions for L-shape and U-shape corners
- Tandem pull-out tall units for pantry storage
Kitchen Cabinet Cost in Singapore (2026 Benchmarks)
Kitchen cabinets in Singapore are usually quoted per running foot, separated into top (wall) and bottom (base) sections. Realistic 2026 pricing for E0 plywood carcass with quality laminate doors and Blum-grade hardware:
- Bottom cabinets: S$220–S$320 per running foot
- Top cabinets: S$180–S$260 per running foot
- Tall units (oven tower, pantry): S$650–S$1,100 per unit
- Sintered stone countertop: S$120–S$220 per running foot
- Quartz countertop: S$90–S$150 per running foot
For a typical L-shape 4-room HDB kitchen with about 12 ft of bottom and 10 ft of top cabinets, expect a complete cabinet system to land around S$6,500 to S$9,500 with quality material. Quotes far below this band usually substitute thinner ply, no-name hinges or skip the soft-close mechanism — costs that surface within two years as wobbly doors and drawer fronts that drop off.

Internal Storage Decisions That Pay Off Daily
The smartest spend in a kitchen renovation isn’t on the visible doors — it’s on internal hardware that you only notice once it’s gone. Real upgrades worth budgeting for:
- Drawer-based base cabinets instead of doors with single shelves
- Cutlery dividers and knife blocks integrated into top drawers
- Pull-out spice racks beside the stove
- Plinth drawers at floor level for trays and baking sheets
- A dedicated tower unit for oven, microwave and pantry pull-out
- Internal LED strip lighting under wall cabinets — at 3000K to 4000K
