Every renovation contractor in Singapore will tell you their carpentry is good. Some of them are right. The difference between a wardrobe that still closes properly in year seven and one that starts sagging in year three is not always visible on the day of handover. It lives in the plywood grade, the hardware brand, the edge banding quality and whether the person who built the piece understood joinery rather than just assembling pre-cut panels.
This guide is about what carpentry quality in Singapore renovation actually means in practical terms: what to look for, what to ask and why the question of whether a contractor makes their own carpentry or subcontracts it matters more than most homeowners realise. From the team at RS Carpentry, who manufacture all our carpentry in our own factory in Woodlands.
What a Carpenter in Singapore Actually Does for Your Renovation
In a whole-unit Singapore renovation, carpentry typically accounts for 35 to 45 percent of the total contractor budget. That is the single largest trade by cost in most HDB and condo renovations. It covers:
- Built-in wardrobes in every bedroom
- Full kitchen cabinet system including upper and lower cabinets, pantry units and integrated appliance housing
- TV feature wall with closed storage and open display niches
- Entryway shoe cabinet and coat storage
- Bathroom vanity cabinets and mirror cabinets
- Study table and home office carpentry
- Dining area sideboards or display units
Each of these pieces is typically designed to fit the exact dimensions of the space it occupies in your flat. Unlike furniture purchased from a showroom, custom carpentry fills from wall to wall and floor to ceiling, recovering the gaps and dead zones that freestanding furniture leaves behind. The result is more total storage volume in the same floor area and a cleaner visual finish.
In-House vs Subcontracted Carpentry: Why It Matters
Most renovation contractors in Singapore subcontract their carpentry to third-party workshops. This is not inherently bad. There are genuinely good subcontracted carpentry workshops in Singapore. The issue is accountability and timeline control.
When a contractor subcontracts carpentry, any quality issue requires a conversation between the contractor and the workshop before it reaches you. Any timeline slippage on the carpentry delivery affects your move-in date but the contractor has limited leverage over the workshop’s schedule. Any specification change mid-project needs to travel through an additional communication layer before it gets to the person making the piece.
When carpentry is made in-house, as it is in our Woodlands factory, these issues reduce significantly. We can inspect a wardrobe before it leaves our facility. We can adjust a cabinet dimension when the site measurement shows a variance. We can accelerate or sequence delivery based on what the site needs rather than waiting for a workshop’s standard delivery queue.
The practical question to ask any renovation contractor is simple: where is your carpentry made and can I visit the workshop? If the answer is vague or involves a third-party they do not have direct management of, build that fact into your assessment of the quotation.
The Carpentry Specification That Matters for Your Home
Carpentry quality lives in a handful of specific decisions that are easy to ask about and easy to verify in writing:
Plywood grade: E0 plywood is the standard for quality Singapore residential carpentry. It has low formaldehyde emissions and handles Singapore humidity better than MDF or chipboard. Ask specifically whether the carcass (the internal box of every cabinet) is E0 plywood and request this to be stated in the quotation.
Laminate supplier: The door and surface finish should be specified by brand and product code, not described vaguely as “quality laminate.” Established Singapore suppliers include Admira, Avora and Lianhin. A product code means you can verify exactly what you are getting and hold the contractor to it. Our laminate Singapore guide covers the suppliers and finish types in full.
Hardware brand: Hinges and drawer runners from Blum, Hettich or Hafele are the standard for carpentry that still works properly in year five. Soft-close on every door and drawer is not a premium option. It is the baseline for quality that the homeowner will notice every single day.
Edge banding: The strip applied to every visible plywood edge. 1mm to 2mm PVC edge banding matched to the face laminate prevents moisture from entering the carcass at the edges and gives a clean finish that does not peel or lift at corners. Ask to see how edges are finished on sample pieces.
How Carpentry Decisions Affect the Look of a Whole-Unit Renovation
The most significant visual design mistake in Singapore whole-unit renovation is specifying different wood tones across different rooms. A light oak wardrobe in the master bedroom, a different oak tone on the TV feature wall in the living room and a third wood-look laminate on the kitchen cabinets do not produce a coherent home. They produce three rooms that were renovated independently and placed next to each other.
A whole-unit carpentry approach selects one wood tone family and one complementary neutral and applies them consistently from the entryway through the living room, kitchen and into the bedrooms. The result is a home that reads as designed rather than assembled. Our guides on Japandi, modern contemporary and Scandinavian interior design all cover how material consistency across rooms defines the style.
Carpentry Cost Benchmarks Singapore 2026
Carpentry is quoted per linear foot for most items. Realistic 2026 ranges for E0 plywood carcass with quality laminate and Blum hardware:
- Swing-door wardrobe: S$240 to S$380 per linear foot
- Sliding-door wardrobe: S$300 to S$450 per linear foot
- Kitchen base cabinets: S$220 to S$320 per linear foot
- Kitchen wall cabinets: S$180 to S$260 per linear foot
- Full-wall TV joinery: S$4,500 to S$8,500 per unit
- Entryway shoe cabinet: S$1,400 to S$3,800 depending on size and configuration
For the full specification breakdown on each carpentry type, our dedicated guides on built-in wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, TV feature walls and shoe cabinets cover each in detail.
